L'Oréal Masked Affair Review and Giveaway

disclaimer: There's a Julep affiliate link in this post.

In case you haven't heard, L'Oreal has a line of nail polish out, Dark Sides of Grey, that's kind of a winking tribute to Fifth Shades of Grey. One of the polishes, Masked Affair, has become super trendy and sought after in the nail polish world online because it's a linear holo, a trendy type of nail polish. You see linear holos a lot from indie nail polish makers, but it's hardly ever seen in mainstream or drugstore polishes. When mainstream companies do try to make holos, they usually aren't that great.

So when Masked Affair came out, everybody got excited. Stores are selling out all over the place. I managed to buy two at Rite Aid, and I'm keeping one for myself and using the other one for a giveaway. One of my friends asked "is it worth the hype?" So I'm doing more of a detailed review today than I usually do when it comes to manicures.

First I started out by painting one coat, which is a pretty normal way to start a manicure, but then I noticed that it was actually pretty sheer at one coat.

After seeing the sheerness, I decided to see if it would work as a top coat. There are actually holographic top coats that you can buy from indie makers for about double the price of this one, and they make every polish a holo. So on my right hand, first I did a coat of Julep Janae, a really dark charcoal grey color.

Janae is definitely a one-coater. I love Julep cremes all around, and this one is no exception. Once the coat dried, I added one coat of Masked Affair to it.

Experiment conclusions: Masked Affair doesn't really work as a holo top coat. One coat is too streaky. On a couple of nails, I tried a thicker layer and on a couple of nails I tried a thinner layer. On the pinky, it looks OK, but it definitely doesn't look like a charcoal holo. It just looks like somebody put layer of silver over a layer of charcoal grey. It looks almost like a crackle on the thinner layers. But on the layers that were thicker it does look more like a linear holo.

On the other hand, it's kind of a fun effect. I think I would actually consider using this technique as base for some kind of nail art .. .maybe some Halloween stamping or nail art stickers over the top? But it definitely does not work as just a top coat.

Back to the original purpose of this polish, on my left hand I went ahead and just did a regular manicure with it. To get it all smooth and opaque, I had to do three coats, which is not that uncommon for holos. It has a semi matte finish, which is actually kind of trendy right now but I'm not sure that I like.

Masked Affair, three coats, no topcoat

The other thing about Masked Affair is it's a little bit on the thick side and it dries kind of fast, so it's slightly challenging to work with. On a couple of nails, I did get a couple of brush marks in it.  Once I started noticing that happening, I was able to correct it. But that's another reason why I decided to use a top coat. Adding my fave quick-dry top coat - INM Out the Door - made it shiny and smoothed it out a little.

note: My index finger has been retouched on this photo. I had a hangnail that was really popping out.
The polish has not been retouched.
And here she is with flash! I have very flat nails, so sometimes linear holos don't really pop out, but she did a pretty good job.

Is it worth the hype? If you can get a get your hands on a bottle of Masked Affair for the retail price at the drugstore, it's a good deal. It is a way to get a holo at a fairly good price. But if you see people out on the internet selling it for way above retail because it's trendy, I wouldn't go for it. There are a lot of indie holos out there that apply a bit better, which you can usually find starting at around $10-12. I personally like Colors by Llarowe, but every nail polish addict has her favorite.

One lucky reader is going to get her hands on a bottle of it right here! Please follow the instructions in the Rafflecopter below. The drawing ends on Wednesday night at Midnight PST, and I'll contact the winner by email on Thursday.

One note on Rafflecopter giveaways- Facebook has a new rule where you can't ask people to like or share content for giveaway entries any more, so that's why it just asks you to "Visit." But if you see something you like it helps small bloggers like me  a lot if you can like or share it. Thanks!

  1. I just bought a Masked Affair along with Totally D'Accord from the same collection. Good to know it doesn't work well as a topper! I'm still new to the world of holo polish, so I figured this was a safe introduction!

  2. Great review! What is my favorite holographic nail polish? I don't have one and am brand new to holos. I only own one Pretty Bitch holo. I would like to try some Colors by Llarowe, I've heard they make great holos and you recommend them here.

  4. I think I actually liked the polish better over the black! But once you apply all three coats and the top coat, it looks very pretty and glam. :) I've actually never tried a holographic nail polish (at least, not to my knowledge). I've been eyeing some ones from Darling Diva, though!

  6. I don't think I could pick a favorite holo, there are so many I love. But Color Club Cherubic is wonderful because it is work appropriate but still lets me wear rainbows only fingertips.

  8. My favorite holo would have to be Colors by Llarowe or Literacy Lacquers. I have tried one bottle of both brands and live them. They are much better than the Avon that I bought a few years ago.
