The challenge mani this week in Adventures in Stamping is "Inspired by Water." I started looking at my plates, and MoYou UK Sailor Collection 04 has all kinds of waves, tidal waves, etc. and that led me to think of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda, which hit the Philippines on Friday and caused widespread devastation, and then moved on to Vietnam. So I went in a dark direction with Julep Stefani and Diane.
Whenever I am near the ocean, I'm struck by how powerful and mysterious it is. Coastlines are fragile, ever-changing environments that people have nonetheless been drawn to for time immemorial. Even walking along the Washington coast on a quiet day, seeing the enormous logs that were one time left behind by what you don't know, but something stronger than high tide, you can see the power the ocean holds. So when storms like this happen, it's a reminder of the unimaginable power of wind and water and the transitory nature of human civilization.
I've never been to the Philippines, but I have had many wonderful Filipino friends and colleagues over the years. In fact, my best friend in grade school was Filipino. And I know there are a lot of Filipino and Vietnamese women in the nail polish world. My thoughts and best hopes go out to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda.
